Azulejos - The art of Portuguese tiles
Portugal, the land of vibrant culture and rich traditions, harbours a jewel that enchants
the hearts of onlookers with its beauty and history - the art of azulejos. These enchanting hand-painted tiles, which appear like a kaleidoscope of vibrant colours and intricate patterns, are not only an aesthetic delight, but also a living window into
Portugal's past and heritage. From the majestic palaces of kings to the picturesque
alleyways of villages, azulejos tell stories of times gone by that intoxicate the senses and fire the imagination.
The history of azulejos dates back to the time of Moorish rule in the 15th century, when this fascinating art form was brought to Portugal by the skilful hands of Moorish artists. The name "azulejo" itself bears traces of this bygone era, derived from the Arabic word "al zulayj", which means "small polished stone". Originally used in palaces, mosques and fountains, these tiles were adopted by the Portuguese after the reconquest of Portugal and became an integral part of Portuguese art and architecture.
The production of azulejos is a complex dance of skill and patience in which the
hands of talented craftsmen play the leading role. First, clay slabs are cut into
a variety of shapes and carefully dried before being coated with an iridescent glaze that
gives them their characteristic lustre and serves as a canvas for the painting to come. Each layer of colour is then applied by hand with delicate precision before the tiles are fired at each step of the process to fix the colours and reveal their luminous beauty.
