Destruction of Tahiti's coral reef for the 2024 Olympic Games

Updated: Jan 18

A monstrous aluminium observation tower is to be built in the lagoon for the Olympic surfing competitions in Tahiti.

The IOC wants to build a new observation platform for judges and TV cameras in the reef in front of the surfing spot. At the moment, there is still a wooden tower there, which the judges use for the World Surf League competitions.

According to the IOC, this tower is too small for the Olympic Games. It is to be replaced by a 14-metre high aluminium structure. Including a technical room, air conditioning and toilets.

Several anchors in the reef would be necessary for the new construction.

The consequences for the sensitive corals could be devastating. Local professional surfer Matahi Drollet even warns that the intervention in the reef could affect the currents and thus destroy the surf spot off Teahupoo.
