The Algarve: a sought-after destination for demanding holidays
But the Algarve is not only interesting because of its spectacular giant waves. The region has long since established itself as the favourite holiday destination for guests with medium and larger budgets. This is due to the wonderful climate, but also to the fascinating nature and the many leisure activities. Those interested in cultural history will also get their money’s worth. Some of the architecture in the cities is several hundred years old and dates back to the time when Portugal was an important seafaring nation.

But when you think of Portugal, it is above all daring surfers who will have their hearts set on fire. One of the best surf spots is Praia do Norte in Nazaré - and this is mainly thanks to its famous monster waves. It has long been a hot spot for big wave surfers. Not only are there huge waves here, the beaches are also easily accessible for surfers. Demanding big wave enthusiasts dream of surfing a giant wave in Nazaré at least once in their lives. Since a monster wave world record was achieved here, the place is known throughout the surfing world. But the other surf spots in the Algarve such as Peniche, Espinho, Praia de Carcavelos and Praia do Cabedelo in Figueira da Foz don’t need to hide behind Nazaré either.
Even surf beginners will find almost perfect conditions for their favourite sport in the Algarve. The waves here are consistent and independent of the tides. This provides ideal conditions for learning to surf properly. Another relief are the
pleasantly warm water temperatures. If you literally “go for a swim” at the North Sea or Baltic Sea, you can quickly lose interest in the new sport. This is guaranteed not to be so problematic in the Algarve. The best times to learn to surf are spring and autumn, because it can get quite crowded on Portugal’s beaches during the summer holidays. In principle, however, surfing is possible all year round in the Algarve.
