The magic of craftsmanship

The production of azulejos is a complex dance of skill and patience in which the hands 

of talented craftsmen play the leading role. First, clay slabs are cut into a variety of 

shapes and carefully dried before being coated with an iridescent glaze that gives them 

their characteristic lustre and serves as a canvas for the painting to come. Each layer of 

colour is then applied by hand with delicate precision before the tiles are fired at each step of the process to fix the colours and reveal their luminous beauty.
